Beyoncé occupies a complex position within contemporary cultural studies. Through her creative works, which broadly encompass music, visuals, dance and poetry, Beyoncé engages various identity politics. This has led to her work being perceived as empowering, appropriative, liberatory and conformist, among other descriptions. In this course, music from Beyoncé’s oeuvre will be positioned as a cultural text through which elements of critical theory can be decoded. Students will be required to present critical engagements of Beyoncé’s music in class.
