Spinoza's "Theological Political Treatise," published anonymously in 1670, offers an innovative, deeply rational account of religion that challenges accepted views of the nature of religion and the state. The treatise integrates an innovative paradigm for biblical exegesis with Spinoza's philosophical views, which at the time of publication remained buried in the unpublished manuscript of his "Ethics." The course will seek to examine Spinoza's critique of religion and his philosophical teachings in the light of each other.
