This reading intensive course will discuss humour theories by Freud, Eagleton, Bakhtin, Bergson and others. It will give an overview the field of comedy studies, differentiating between laughter, humour and comedy studies and situate comedy within affect studies, focusing on Berlant and Ngai.
It will be complemented by readings of primary literature from canonical British authors like Swift, Austen and Wilde, as well as other media texts.
