Indian Poetry has existed in English as one of the most potent examples of colonialism in the Indian subcontinent. But what can this poetry tell us? In this introductory class about poetry, and more importantly, postcolonial poetry, we will be looking at Indian poetry's history by focussing on a poet in each class. Poets like Tagore will be read alongside "contemporaries" like Toru Dutt and radically new 21st century poets like Shalim M. Hussain. This introductory class is aimed to equip students with an overview about the history and critical appreciation of Indian poetry and postcolonial literature that comes from the subcontinent. Students will be required to read a few poems alongside an academic essay every week and at the end of the semester, they will have to be able to write an academic essay on one or two of the poets that we will be discussing in the class.
