This seminar will examine Romantic writing from the late 18th and early 19th centuries concerned with questions of social revolution and democracy. We will discuss the impact of the French Revolution on British Romantic writing, as well as on British society and British thinkers, and examine how Romantic writers poetically engaged with the increasing political demands for greater democracy in Britain and associated topics including women's rights and the abolition of slavery.
This is an introductory level course that will include practice in applying the methods of literary analysis and interpretation taught in the Introduction to Literary Studies lecture.
