Social media is one of the most important sources for young people to get information about politics – deliberately and incidentally. Many argue that biases in social media exposure to political content is related to recent voting trends of young people across Europe. In this research seminar, we are taking a deep dive into the state-of-the-art research on social media and elections, or more broadly, political communication on social media.
Students will acquire a critical understanding of how digitalization of mass media affects democracy, how different actors use social media, how media affects political outcomes, whether algorithms are biased, whether populist parties are more successful on social media, and how political communication is currently regulated.
