This course, which is part of the module Systemlinguistik, will deal with syntactic structures in writing and speech. We will compare traditional syntactic descriptions of several sentence formats (e.g. passive, it-clefts, wh-clefts, extrapositions, etc.) with more recent discourse-functional accounts. We will then look at real language data (texts & interactions) and explore which model captures syntactic structures and their use more realistically. Eventually, we shall arrive at what has recently entered scientific discussions under the label of social action formats.
