This course provides an introduction to the field of linguistic variation/variational linguistics as well as to the question of how international varieties of English have been dealt with in linguistic research up to now. Two varieties of English Irish English and Hong Kong English will be in the main focus of the seminar. We will examine their diachronic development as well as their synchronic linguistic properties on the phonological, morphological, syntactical, and grammatical level, and we will try to universalize our findings with regard to the crucial questions of English variational linguistics in general.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of GLIN
