The course will investigate into the development of language(s) in the British Isles and Ireland. It will cover a period between around BC 500 up until today and analyse a wide range of situations of language contact between "native Celtic, Germanic, Romance and other languages over the centuries. Historical stages of English and their linguistic characteristics will play a role as well as Celtic languages like Irish-Gaelic, Scottish-Gaelic, Manx-Gaelic, Welsh and Cornish, the so-called Celtic Englishes (e.g. Irish English, Scottish English and Welsh English) as well as other community languages which used to be spoken or still are spoken today.
