Both the declining Celtic languages and the variants of English as a dominant language in the former overseas colonies have been the concern of much linguistic analysis. What scholars seem to have largely ignored, however, is the English language in England"s first colonies: Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, The Isle of Man, and Scotland. The English of those areas of Canada, in which many Irish and Scottish immigrants settled, also belong to this particular type of English in contact. This course will examine the diachronic development as well as the synchronic linguistic properties of these Celtic varieties of English on the phonological, morphological, syntactical, and grammatical levels. The varieties featured will be (Northern & Southern) Irish English, Scottish English, Welsh English, English on the Isle of Man, Labrador English, and Newfoundland English. Prerequisites: Successful completion of GLIN.
Literatur	The relevant literature will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
Leistungsnachweis	Presentation, Minutes, and Final exam.
