Andreas Huyssen beschreibt die heutige Gedächtniskultur als eine überraschende kulturelle und politische Entwicklung der letzten Jahre, in der Konzepte wie "re-presentation, repetition, replication, and the culture of the copy, with or without original" regelrecht zur fixen Idee geworden sind. Mit einem Fokus auf aktuellen polnischen und anglophonen Auseinandersetzungen mit (traumatischen) historischen Ereignissen widmet sich das Seminar der Präsenz von Vergangenheit in popkulturellen, künstlerischen und literarischen Gesten der Wiederholung, der Reinszenierung, des Nacherlebens von Geschichte. Wie können wir die jährliche Wiederaufführung der "Entdeckung" Australiens durch James Cook verstehen? Was bedeutet das, wenn der polnische Performer Rafał Betlejewski im Sommer 2010 zum Jahrestag des Jedwabne-Massakers eine Scheune anzündet? Das Re-enactment hat gegenwärtig in der anglophonen und der polnischen Kultur eine auffallend hohe Konjunktur, deren Gründen und Erscheinungsweisen wir im Seminar nachgehen wollen. Im Seminar werden sowohl populäre und mediale Nachstellungen von historischen Ereignissen (z.B. der Schlacht bei Tannenberg oder der Battle of Hastings), als auch Reenactment-Projekte in der Kunst (u.a. von Yael Bartana, Jeremy Deller, Rod Dickinson, Artur Żmijewski) sowie literarische Strategien der Evozierung von Vergangenheit (u. a. in Texten von Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz und Tom McCarthy) diskutiert. Das Phänomen der Wiederholung wird dabei aus philosophischer, psychoanalytischer und gedächtnistheoretischer Sicht beleuchtet. Die vergleichende Perspektive des Seminars, das für Studierende der Slawistik und der Anglistik gemeinsam angeboten wird, erlaubt es uns darüber hinaus nach den jeweiligen erinnerungskulturellen Kontexten zu fragen, in die diese Praktiken eingebettet sind. Seminarsprache: Deutsch, Lesekenntnisse des Englischen sind Voraussetzung, Kenntnisse des Polnischen sind nicht notwendig. For Andreas Huyssen, the notion of memory has attained remarkable prominence in contemporary culture. In its wake, cultural theorists and critics have become obsessed with "re-presentation, repetition, replication, and the culture of the copy, with or without original. With a focus on current Polish and Anglophone engagements with (traumatic) pasts, the seminar is devoted to current pop-cultural, literary and artistic gestures of repetition. What are we to make of annual stagings of the "discovery of Australia by James Cook? What does it mean when, in the summer of 2010 and on the anniversary of the Jedwabne massacre, Polish performer Rafał Betlejewski sets fire to a barn? Reenactments are currently remarkably popular, and our seminar seeks to address the reasons for this trend. We will discuss popular reenactments of historical events (e.g. the battle of Tannenberg and the Battle of Hastings), artistic reenactment projects (by Yael Bartana, Jeremy Deller, Rod Dickinson and Artur Żmijewski), as well as literary evocations of the past (including texts by Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz and Tom McCarthy). In our analysis of the phenomenon of repetition we will draw on insights from the fields of philosophy, psychoanalysis and memory studies. The seminar is offered jointly for students of Slavic and English Studies, and this comparative perspective allows us also to inquire into the respective cultural contexts in which these practices are embedded. Seminar language: German reading knowledge of English is a prerequisite knowledge of Polish is not required.
