Spoken language is much like music, in that it essentially consists of sounds produced in real time. Speakers generally manipulate parameters such as loudness, duration/tempo, intonation/pitch, voice qualities, etc. to convey or cue certain meanings. Such sound phenomena above the level of individual sounds are subsumed under the term "Prosody" in linguistics.

In this course, which can be used as part of the modules Systemlinguistik or Text-/Diskurslinguistik, we will explore some of these phenomena. First, we will consider prosodic issues (intonation, rhythm, intensity, accentuation etc.) from a formal perspective, i.e. looking at which parameters speakers can manipulate to yield distinct realizations of their talk. Subsequently, we will take a functional perspective and look at real language data to see which meanings speakers may convey or cue with different prosodic realizations.
