This course is designed to introduce students to different ways of investigating (situated or contexted) meaning in written texts and spoken interaction (Speech Act Theory/Pragmatics, Conversation Analysis & Discourse Analysis). Each approach will be considered in terms of its underlying theory and the practical tools it provides for analyzing meaning. The goal of this course is to enable students to conduct their own analyses of meaning in written or spoken data. An additional, critical focus will be placed on the suitability of each approach for performing such analyses, as to enable students to reasonably choose one over the other whenever they have to.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of the Grundmodul (GLin/BMLin).

Registration: The number of participants in this course is limited to 40 students. Please use the course moodle to enrol for this class. Enrolment starts on Oct 2nd at 10 a.m..
