The problem of explaining language change seems to resolve itself into three separate problems: the origin of linguistic variation, the spread and propagation of linguistic changes, and the regularity of linguistic change. From the early 20th century onwards, urban dialectologists and sociolinguists have conducted a number of fieldwork studies to capture and measure the extent of all of these facets of language change in rural and urban areas all over the (English-speaking) world. This course will investigate into the most prominent sociolinguistic fieldwork studies by looking at underlying sociolinguistic theories, sample designs, fieldwork techniques, etc. as well as by discussing major findings as drawn from each of these studies.

Please note that this course will require regular - and in cases also extensive - reading in preparation for each of the sessions.
