This course is about the politics and practices of international development. After a brief review of the theoretical background and some recent development data, the course will take a critical look at recent challenges for development policy and development coope¬ration. Some of the topics covered in the course include: poverty reduction strategies and PRSP; a review of the Millennium Development Goals; tools and practices of monitoring and evaluation; the debate on the effectiveness of aid; HIPC and debt relief; governance, demo¬cracy and development; climate change and development; agriculture and food security; civil conflict and international humanitarian relief; culture and development; new donors and donor agencies.
Course Registration is done via PULS and Moodle
students are required to: attend all classes (85%); do all assigned reading; prepare a presentation of one topic (25’); participate in class discussions and small group activities; write a term paper
