Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the most widely read and influential U.S. American writers of the 19th century. Starting from his, admittedly challenging, novels and short-stories, this course will explore pivotal ideas of (American) literature, such as the American Rennaissance, Transcendentalism, the American Gothic, liminality, the American short-story and the Puritan influence.
