Description Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements and grading.

The course presents a series of lectures that will introduce you into the history of English. We will follow the progression of the language from Germanic to Old, Middle and Modern English trying to answer questions such as: What is the English language? Why do we speak it the way we do? You will learn about those language changes that shaped up Present Day English and contributed to a number of its curiosities such as the system of tenses or the discrepancy between spelling and pronunciation - one of the major difficulties for ESL students.

Note: For students of `B2 Anglistik und Amerikanistik 2008`, `BL Englisch 2008`, and `B2 Anglistik und Amerikanistik 2011` this course is part of the `Grundmodul`. For students of `BL Englisch 2013` this course is part of the `Aufbaumodul 1 - Entwicklung und Variation der englischen Sprache`.
