Description Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements and grading.

This course gives an overview of syntax as one of the major areas of linguistic inquiry. Traditional approaches to syntactic structures will serve as a basis for syntactic and interactional linguistic analyses of classroom talk. The analyses will focus on the interactional use of syntactic structures in spoken language, particularly teacher talk, in classroom contexts. Phenomena to be investigated include question formulation, the pursuit of student responses, turn-taking, among others. In the end, a contrastive perspectivewill be taken.
Readings include relevant literature on English Grammar (e.g., Greenbaum & Quirk: 1990, Brinton, 2000), as well as Conversation Analysis , comparing L1 to L2 classrooms.
