This lecture & seminar is designed to introduce students to social and psychological aspects of individual bilingualism and languages in contact. We will look at the sociolinguistic dimension of bilingualism, dealing with aspects of language choice (Who speaks what language to whom and when?) and bilingual interaction. We will next examine the linguistic dimension of bilingualism, including code-switching, code-mixing, and borrowing. We will then proceed to the individual dimension of bilingualism, discussing issues such as the differences between early and late as well as simultaneous and consecutive acquisition of two languages.
