This advanced course is designed to provide students with a survey of basic theories, methods and current trends in the linguistic analysis of spoken discourse. Beyond Speech Act Theory, we will focus in particular on Conversation Analysis (CA) and Interactional Linguistics. Theory and methods of the various approaches will be laid out. In addition, participants will be trained in the practical application of the methods and approaches covered, including recording and transcription techniques of actual language material. This course is intended to prepare participants for carrying out their own research projects for their graduation.
