Description Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements and grading.

This course aims to lead to a deeper understanding of the features that contribute to what is perceived as accented speech and tries to integrate theoretical and practical perspectives. We will begin with a comprehensive definition of accent and will discuss several important theoretical concepts such as the critical period, ultimate attainment and aliveness. We will explore aspects that form the acoustic basis of accents, ranging from subsegmental and segmental to suprasegmental phenomena. Furthermore, we will review evidence concerning the claim that children and adults differ fundamentally in terms of phonetic learning ability.
Finally, sociolinguistic aspects of accents will be discussed, i.e. different attitudes towards having an accent or why certain accents are detested while others are viewed as "cute".
