Description Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements and grading.

This seminar will investigate how politeness is realized in language and how linguistics has approached the study of language politeness. We will look at politeness theories, which attempt to provide systematic explanations of politeness phenomena, as well as at empirical studies, which try to capture mechanisms of politeness at work in actual language use. Even though English is the language of reference, the seminar has a clear cross-linguistics focus and thus takes the influence of other language backgrounds into consideration, for instance in the framework of cross-cultural communication, foreign language learning and lingua franca encounters.
Literature The readings will be announced in the first session.
Certificates Credit requirements will be announced in the first session.
