Description

Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements and grading.

This research seminar will engage students in the cognitive-sociolinguistic investigation of cultural models expressed in different varieties of English. After an introduction to the relevant theoretical concepts and methodologies, students are asked to extract and analyze (parts of) cultural models expressed in different varieties of English, as found in corpora and online sources. Students can expand on existing studies or attempt to arrive at cultural conceptualizations on their own. The seminar takes place in a computer lab, and the number of participants is therefore limited to 20. Literature: A reader will be provided at the beginning of the semester. Requirements: A presentation based on research conducted in class.
