Description

This seminar is aimed to enable students to investigate the notion of multiple modernities in three distinct steps: a) an analysis of dominant theories of modernity and modernization as a Western formation b) an assessment of various postcolonial and decolonial projects that claim the coexistence of plural modernities and c) a discussion of some of the more influential critiques of the model of multiple modernities. Readings will comprise texts by Anthony Giddens, Shmuel Eisenstadt, Partha Chatterjee, Dipesh Chakrabarty, and Fredric Jameson.

Literature:
Reading material will be made available on moodle at the beginning of the term.

Creditation & grading:
3 CPs for regular and active participation, a session chair and a brief seminar paper.
