Description

From the moment human beings adopted a sedentary way of life their habitations attained high symbolic value. From hovel and hut to mansion and loft, forms of housing are often understood to reflect not only their owners social status but also his/her personality. In addition the forms and spatial distribution of lodgings are reflective also of privileges of gender, race and class.
This seminar will look at forms of housing as they evolved during the 400 years of European settlement on the North American continent and will also analyze Native American and African American habitations.
