Caribbean history is a history of colonialism, the Atlantic slave trade, maroon and slave uprisings, and a multitude of languages, cultures, and ethnicities. We will study the Caribbean as a space with “no center and no outward edge,” but we will also look specifically at the history of several islands (Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic) and Caribbean communities in the United States. We will draw on a variety of cultural material (theory, fiction, and film) for our discussion of Caribbean culture.
