Improving your expression in and knowledge of English through intensive comparison and contrast with German: that is the main purpose of this course. Translation is a powerful tool for improving your proficiency because it uses your native language - your semantic bedrock that all your explorations in the second language build on. Alan Duff: "Translation develops three qualities essential to all language learning: flexibility, accuracy, and clarity. It trains the learner to search (flexibility) for the most appropriate words (accuracy) to convey what is meant (clarity)." You learn to think from words and structures to meanings translation sensitizes you to the nuances of language better than any other learning activity. By contrasting the meanings of words and syntax, you can move away from literal (whatever that means!) translations to meaning (whatever that is!). When you think about it, any real interaction with an author or a person speaking involves acts of translation the deeper the engagement, the more challenging and fruitful the translation. In much of your second language learning, you attempt to become acquainted with the different English-speaking cultures. A translation course reverses this, which can be a pleasant experience. Working with works from the native culture enhances your understanding and appreciation of German writing even as you make its meaning clear to others. Good translators, as George Steiner has written, are like perfect hosts, as they mediate between two strangers with different cultures who otherwise would not know how to communicate.
