This tutorial is designed for native speakers of German and English both to improve your understanding of literature and your language proficiency. [Non-native speakers are of course heartily welcome, though will face additional challenges.] There is a synergy between translating and understanding imaginative prose: in fact, I would claim there is no better way to understand a literary work than to attempt a translation of it. And no language activity I can think of demands a more intensive reflection on the meanings of words and structures than translating literature. Each week we will work one text - German texts to be translated into English. Sometimes the translations will be done individually and discussed sometimes we will do collaborative translating. Revisions after discussion will then be done. In addition, I will ask you to write short critical commentaries on some of your own translations as well as ed translations of your classmates these may be done on Moodle forums created for this purpose. These commentaries will consist of making sense of your judgments against differing judgments of classmates and professional translators. Finally, we will also compare and contrast published translations of ed prose works. You shall bring copies of your draft translations to class. In group work you will then discuss your translation. Translations are to be posted on the appropriate forum in Moodle for further comments. You will be translating about 400-500 words every week (if poetry, then about 20 lines) you will read a (usually short) short story every second week.
