The seminar will examine the development of political, economic and security relations between the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States since World War II. Attention is given to six major themes and time periods: (1) the formative years 1945-49, including the Marshall Plan and the Berlin blockade, (2) the "special relationship" between German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles in the 1950s, (3) Willy Brandts New Ostpolitik and the Nixon-Kissinger policy of détente, (4) the missile debate and the peace movement after 1979, (5) the American role in German unification, and (6) the U.S. attitude toward the integration of Europe. The course will be offered in English.
