Style can be defined as the conscious use of language variation, and stylistics as a discipline that combines (text-)linguistic analysis with aspects of practical language and literary studies. In this course we will have a look at different approaches to style on all linguistic levels (e.g. morphology, lexicology, syntax, pragmatics) and the factors that lead language users to choose one linguistic form over another depending on the context, medium, etc.
Students will get an overview of key principles (such as metaphors and foregrounding theory) as well as more recent developments (e.g. in cognitive and quantitative stylistics), and will be given the opportunity to apply their knowledge to the stylistic analysis of both literary and non-literary texts.
