Description
Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements and grading.
The seminar will look at historical and contemporary Black British and Afro-Caribbean social and concert dance. By examining, for example, Les Ballets Negres and the parades of the Notting Hill Carnival we will develop an understanding of dance as a type of performance which can produce and negotiate cultural identity. Analyzing and trying out dances like Hip-Hop and Dancehall will allow us to discuss cultural expression and transnational identities both in Great Britain and in the Black Atlantic at large.
You will be expected to take part in two practical lessons with a dance instructor (10-15 euros). These lessons will give you the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the basics of Afro, HipHop and other dances important to the Black Atlantic and Black Birtish dance. (You will not be graded on your dancing skills.) For those who cannot take part in these dance lessons an alternative will be offered.
