Description

Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements and grading.

The main objective of this course is to demonstrate that modernity is not homogenous in its manifestation worldwide. We shall seek to show how local knowledge cultures negotiate global modernity in a manner that is contextually meaningful within Africa. This would enable us to comprehend the intrigues at play as the structures of modernity configure and get reconfigured by local epistemologies. Postcolonial modernity will therefore be perceived as simultaneously drawing from global modernity and overcoming its limitations with the end result being the emergence of a domesticated brand of African modernity.
