Description Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements and grading.

Afrofuturism refers to cultural production primarily by Afro-diasporic artists who draw on science fiction and other futurist ideas, sounds and iconography. The (ever growing) body of work which has been discussed under the umbrella term of Afrofuturism ranges from literature to visual arts and music (the latter of which will be a focus of this course).
Students will be invited to analyse different texts, images, and musical pieces and investigate how afrofuturistic ideas are constructed through and around these works. This will be discussed in relation to representations of Blackness and its stereotyped and often racist implications in the context of postcolonial power structures.
