In recent years, cultural studies have taken an increasing interest in the human body as a site for the playing out of cultural and social difference. The enormous influence of the work of Michel Foucault, the impact of feminism and the growth of consumer culture have all contributed to the notion that the body, despite its apparent naturalness, is culturally shaped. In this seminar, we will examine some of the theories relevant to constructionist accounts of the body (e.g. Michel Foucault, Judith Butler) but also look at a wide range of examples that show how the body is invested with meaning in everyday life, popular culture and the mass media (e.g. fashion, conceptions of beauty, illness and death, new bodily technologies).
