Description

Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements and grading.

The existence of "evil" is a central challenge in monotheistic religions. How can there be sin and suffering in a world that was created by an all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-good God who watches over his creations? The Hebrew Bible presents a variety of ways of coping with this problem of "theodicy". In this course, we will read selections from the Hebrew Bible that reflect some of these approaches, in different genres: a mythical approach (Genesis), a legal-historical approach that emphasizes reward and punishment (Exodus, Judges, Kings), a pragmatic approach (Ecclesiastes, Proverbs, Job) and an eschatological approach  (Isaiah).
