This course will examine the diachronic development as well as the synchronic linguistic properties of the Celtic varieties of English as spoken in Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, The Isle of Man, Scotland, as well as in those areas of Canada in which many Irish and Scottish immigrants settled. While examining major phonological, morphological, syntactical, and grammatical properties of each variety, the course will also ask to which extent Celtic English features influenced the evolution of other World Englishes, most notably the ones spoken in North America, Africa, and Australia.
Literatur The relevant literature will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
