British literature and culture has produced a particular comic tradition, which will be at the centre of critical enquiry. This seminar looks at how humour is expressed in British literature and aims to define it, paying close attention to its language. We will also focus on the function of humour for a ion of texts. Moreover, the role of humour for the construction of a ‘national identity’ will be explored and critically examined.
The class requires extensive reading and a high level of English.
