Afropolitanism is a term to challenge a largely uncritical application of ‘Africa’ as a tag of identity. The term attends to the complexity of the seemingly simple question “Where are you from?” faced by people of African descent living in Europe or North America. In our increasingly globalized world people move and in moving, they encounter new people and contexts which expand their vision and perception of who they are. In this seminar, we will discuss the concept of the Afropolitan and read novels written by and about female Afropolitans and their encounters.
