This seminar will explore the system linguistic properties (phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicology, semantics) and sociolinguistic dimensions (language contact, language choice, bi-/multilingualism) of English as spoken in Southern Africa. The main focus will be on English in the Republic of South Africa (Black South African English, South African Indian English and Afrikaans English), however varieties of English in Namibia and Botswana will also feature in the course.
