Scholars from different disciplines have raised various implications of an understanding of history, identity and the place of historical consciousness in contemporary societies. The texts discussed in this seminar aim to cross the boundaries between those three subjects and therefore also between the academic disciplines of sociology, history and cultural studies in order to detect the significance and understanding of history in Britain’s and Germany’s post-Cold War armies. Historical experiences, as much as the understanding and perceptions of those experiences, can be driving forces for actions in the present. Those forces can find expression in the political actions of nation states as well as the actions of individuals who identify with their nation’s history by perceiving it as a central part of their own identity. The underlying argument for this assumption is that people make decisions not based exclusively on their self-interests, but also as representatives of a particular culture with a particular interpretation of the past that can either be adapted or rejected depending on the subjective perceptions of the individual. The texts discussed in this seminar will demonstrate that the feasibility of using experiences derived from the past for one’s own actions does not require a particular amount of knowledge, but rather the ability to bring the past and what is known about it in line with the present. Im Mittelpunkt der Übung steht das Verstehen und Interpretieren von Texten verschiedener Disziplinen, die sich mit unterschiedlichen Geschichtsverständnissen in Deutschland und Großbritannien auseinandersetzen. Mit einem Fokus auf der Rolle und dem Verständnis von Geschichte innerhalb der modernen britischen und deutschen Armeen, soll das Seminar die Studenten nicht nur an die kritische Quellenlektüre heranführen, sondern ihnen darüber hinaus auch Hilfestellungen liefern, englische Texte in Zukunft nicht nur schneller verstehen zu können, sondern sie auch schneller in ihren akademischen Kontext einordnen zu können.
