English is spoken in many different communities around the world. It is used for different purposes and, more often than not, it is not the only language spoken by the people who use it. In this seminar, we will investigate different varieties of English and discuss them in the context of the societies they are spoken in. So apart from linguistic aspects, we will also consider historical and political issues regarding the development and spread of English as well as questions of language choice and institutional support in multilingual communities.
