Herman Cohens pupil, Franz Rosenzweig, is considered to be the first existentialist in modern Jewish thought. His magnum opus Der Stern der Erlösung (1921), is one of the most original and important work in Jewish philosophy. Rosenzweig presents a unique system of thought, combining philosophy and theology. His thought develops while pointing out the weaknesses of the nineteenth-century German idealist philosophical tradition that preceded him, as well as criticizing theology. Rosenzweig saw himself as a thinker that established a new thinking (Das neue Denken) that should replace the old Idealistic approach. This course will be dedicated to a careful comparative reading of Cohen and mostly Rosenzweigs works, focusing on similarities and differences in their philosophical position and in their approach to religion and religiosity.
Literatur Franz Rosenzweig, Der Stern der Erlösung - You can bring either the German origin or the English/Hebrew translations.
