In this course we will do close reading of ions from one or more central texts of Rabbi Judah Bezalel Löw, also known as the Maharal of Prague, in the original Hebrew. One of the most fascinating of the early modern thinkers, his work is influenced by philosophy as well as kabbalah, expresses both “modern” and strongly traditionalist aspects. Our text(s) will be chosen in conjunction with the students. These will be supplemented by related readings in modern scholarship. The seminar will be conducted in English. Readings will be in Hebrew.
