Today one speaks of “Judaism”, by which we mean a system of belief and practice tied to a specific community, but in the Hebrew Bible and in Rabbinic Judaism of late antiquity there is no unified, systematic statement, only a variety of genres that jointly produce multi-vocal expressions of a religious culture. It is only in medieval times that an attempt was made to spell out in a single, coherent discourse the nature, definition, and meaning of “Judaism”. This was the legal-philosophical project of Maimonides in his Mishneh Torah (12th century). In this course we shall first read ed rabbinic texts that serve as the foundations for the work of Maimonides, and then we shall see how in the Mishneh Torah he constructs, from these materials, a philosophical statement about the authority, power, and definition of “Judaism”.
