The course will examine topics relating to biblical-rabbinic theology and law, as they appear in several modern commentaries on the Five Books of Moses, composed over the past one hundred and fifty years. The commentaries to be studied represent the major religious movements in contemporary Judaism: Ultra/Modern Orthodoxy, Reform, and Conservative movements. Representative illustrations of theology and law will be taken from the following commentaries: Samson Raphael Hirsch Torah Commentary (1867-1878) Hertz Pentateuch (1930-1935) Plaut Torah Commentary (1981) Nehama Leibowitz Torah Commentaries (1966-1996) Art Scroll Torah Commentary (1993) and Etz Hayim Torah Commentary (2001).
