In Modern English we find many words that belong to the native, Germanic element of the vocabulary and that have cognates in Modern German, like king/König, soul/Seele, live/leben, sleep/schlafen, good/gut, white/weiß, …However, the English forms differ more or less from the German ones, which is due to sound changes that occurred in the history of English and German. The mechanisms of these sound changes that occurred in the history of English will be the topic of the seminar. We will also discuss what might have caused these changes and what their phonological consequences were.
