Like class, ethnicity, gender and illness, age has in recent years emerged as an important category of cultural difference. The seminar will focus on a specific kind of age narrative which is concerned with an extremely extended life span: longevity. From the Enlightenment onwards, the medieval stories of miraculous old age have been substituted for narratives about the hope for the end of ageing. These stories encompass a focus on extreme and fantastic old age, eternal life and eternal youth as well as immortality. We will analyse a variety of literary, medical and philosophical longevity narratives from the eighteenth century onwards to the present.
