Interest in teaching foreign languages to children has grown rapidly in recent years. However, starting to learn a foreign language at an early age does not automatically lead to better results in the language learning process. The aims of this course are to: • focus on research on how languages are learned and to consider its implications for the teaching of English as an additional language to young learners. • give an overview of skills and competences children develop during the first years of additional language learning in the classroom • provide insights into the learning opportunities created through the use of coursebooks and different kinds of tasks and activities for young learners.
