This seminar will focus on the historical development of the English vocabulary. Based on a theoretical description of the elements and their relation in the lexicon as well as of mechanisms of lexical and semantic change we will deal with the intake of words from other languages into the lexicon of English, the passing out of use of native words, semantic change, the problem of "hard words’ in English, etc. Another important topic will be the restructuring of word-formation patterns in the history of English, e.g. the enormous productivity of compounding and derivation in Old English (lar-hus vs. school), the replacement of prefixed verbs (utgan) by phrasal verbs (go out), the increasing productivity of zero-derivation (to bottle) in Modern English etc.
