This course gives a wide-ranging introduction into European Defence, its development as a policy area on the level of the European Union, its actors, paradigms and instruments. Areas to be explored also include international and multilateral partners of European Defence as well as current problems and challenges. Defence policy is a sensitive and highly political field, one that is embedded in a context of geopolitical great-power competition and complex international relations.
By touching upon a series of topics, and by being exposed to a variety of academic genres and styles, students will familiarize themselves with European Defence issues – while understanding the differences between those formats written for a variety of audiences and using distinct language. Students will train valuable academic skills by producing and reviewing a series of short academic texts.
The course ends by asking the question where European Defence should be heading so that an ambitious but underperforming international actor such as the EU can hope to wield influence effectively in the New World Disorder.
